Erling Haaland has been one of the most important parts of Manchester City’s success at the front since he joined back in 2022. The prolific striker joined the Citizens from Borussia Dortmund and seamlessly took over an important role from the start of his first season in England.

However, the 2025-26 campaign has seen the Norwegian striker post his slowest start to a Premier League season. Bizarrely, six goals in his opening five games is his slowest start. While most forwards would celebrate such a return, for Haaland it marks a decline compared to his blistering beginnings in the last few years.

Comparing Erling Haaland Opening Tallies

Haaland set the tone in his debut season by scoring nine goals in his first five league matches in 2022-23. He instantly announced himself to the English top flight with such performances. He followed that up with seven goals in the same span during 2023-24.

He peaked again with ten in 2024-25. This year’s six-goal tally is still among the best in the league. However, it represents a noticeable dip by his own remarkable standards. Despite the slower start, Pep Guardiola’s side continues to benefit from Haaland’s presence up front.

The striker undoubtedly remains central to City’s attack. Haaland’s physical dominance and movement inside the box still make him a constant threat to all opponents in the league. That is, even if his early numbers this season suggest a quieter start compared to his explosive entry seasons.

Why the Dip?

Several factors may explain the slight decline. Opposition teams have adjusted, often doubling up on Haaland to limit his touches in dangerous areas. Injuries in City’s midfield have also affected service to the striker. Additionally, Kevin De Bruyne’s departure also adds to that equation.

Guardiola has been experimenting with tactical tweaks that see Haaland contribute more to link-up play than just finishing chances. Still, given his track record, it may only be a matter of time before the goals flow freely again.

If history is any indication, Haaland is likely to hit his stride as the season progresses. Last term he finished with over 30 Premier League goals despite dips in form during the winter months. Even with the slow start compared to his own standards, it could end up as another good season for him.
