NFL Week 2 Monday Night Football Double Header Results – Buccaneers Narrow Escape against Texans, Chargers Rout Raiders in Vegas

MNF double-header concludes week 2 action as the Buccaneers and Chargers go 2-0 to start the season!

Week 2 of this year’s NFL season came to an end with Monday Night Football (MNF) featuring a double-header. The first matchup to take place was between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who visited NRG Stadium in Houston to take on the Texans, while the second game was played between AFC West divisional rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Buccaneers Come from Behind to Win a Close One in Houston

The 0-1 Texans met the 1-0 Buccaneers at home in this week 2 matchup in an inter-conference battle. Both teams got off to a good start on the offensive side of the ball before the game began to settle down.

Defensive Battle after First Quarter Burst

The Texans took a 7-0 lead on their first drive of the game with a couple of good contributions from running back Nick Chubb and an amazing 30+ yard connection between C.J. Stroud and Nico Collins, resulting in a touchdown near the right sideline.

Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay answered right back with a methodical drive that ended in 7 points as the teams exchanged touchdowns early in the first quarter. Houston then took a 10-7 lead through a field goal. Tampa Bay would right back in the second quarter with another touchdown, this time from rookie wideout Emeka Egbuka, who has started the season with a bang.

Both defenses then hold their own, and the third quarter would be the first one to go scoreless as the Bucs still held on to a slender 14-10 lead. Of course, that was aided by a 38-yard missed field goal by Tampa Bay late in the third quarter.

Excitement Returns in the Fourth

Marching down the field to start the fourth quarter, the Texans stitched together an efficient drive with precision passing, but failed to put up points after rolling the dice on 4th and goal and coming up short.

However, the Texans came up big on special teams, blocking a punt and receiving possession inside the 40-yard line. Unfortunately, all the Texans could get from that was a 53-yard field goal, which reduced the deficit to 14-13.

With the defense coming up big once again for Houston, the Texans had another brilliant special teams play, returning a long punt return to set up shop inside the Buccaneers’ 30-yard line. Nick Chubb did the rest with a 25-yard carry going untouched to the endzone to put the Texans up 19-14, but the failed 2-point conversion would prove to be a huge moment with the game winding down.

With a 4th and 10, deep in their own territory, Mayfield somehow found a way to escape the pressure and ran for a first down, a monumental play with a little over a minute left in the game. Mayfield led the game-winning drive as running back Rachaad White found the endzone on 2nd and goal, handing the Bucs a thrilling win on the road.

Buccaneers vs Texans Game Stats

For the Texans, Stroud finished with 207 passing yards and a touchdown, while Nick Chubb was the leading rusher with 43 yards and a touchdown. Nico Collins had 3 catches for 52 yards and one receiving touchdown.

As for the Buccaneers, Mayfield finished the game with 215 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, while Bucky Irving had 72 yards on the ground. Mike Evans and Irving had 56 and 50 receiving yards, respectively.

Chargers Win Back-to-Back Games against Divisional Opponents

The Los Angeles Chargers picked up exactly where they left things after their week 1 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, after taking down another AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders. In a one-sided game, Vegas was never able to put up any challenge against the much improved Chargers team.

Los Angeles got off to a fast start and never looked back. Taking a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Chargers would go on to extend their lead to 11 points, going up 17-6 at the half.

The game slowed down in the second half as the two teams were able to trade just a pair of field goals, and L.A. ran out of the game with a dominant 20-9 win. The highlight of the game was the Chargers’ defense, which not only stopped the Raiders on both their 4th down conversion attempts, but also picked off quarterback Geno Smith three times.

Los Angeles also managed to hold Vegas to just 218 total yards and 3.4 yards per play. Furthermore, the Raiders never managed to find the endzone and had to settle for just three field goals in the entire game.

Geno Smith had a terrible day at the office, finishing with just 180 passing yards after completing 24 of 43 pass attempts. He also threw 3 interceptions in the process. Ashton Jeanty had 43 rushing yards, and Jakobi Myers was the pick of the receivers with 68 receiving yards.

On the other hand, Justin Herbert had another solid performance, finishing with 2 passing touchdowns and 242 yards through the air. He also led the team in rushing with 31 yards, while Queintin Johnstone’s 71 receiving yards were the most for all receivers, even as Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey had useful contributions.

With the two MNF games in the bag now, it’s time to focus on week 3. The Texans travel to Jacksonville for a divisional game against the Jaguars, while the Buccaneers are at home against the Jets. The Raiders are on the road against the Washington Commanders, and the Chargers are at home for the third consecutive divisional opponent, the Denver Broncos.
