Joe Burrow Injury Update – Will Cincinnati Bengals QB Undergo Surgery for Turf Toe and When Will Joe Burrow Recover?

Joe Burrow’s toe injury leaves Bengals scrambling for answers, future uncertain.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a left toe injury in the first half of Sunday’s Week 2 clash against the Jacksonville Jaguars, leaving his availability moving forward in serious doubt. The setback came midway through the second quarter with the Bengals trailing 14-7, when defensive lineman Arik Armstead sacked Burrow, forcing him into an awkward fall. Trainers rushed to his side as Burrow tried walking off on his own but eventually needed assistance to the locker room, visibly limping and unable to put weight on his left foot.

Most recently, it was revealed that Burrow is expected to undergo surgery Friday at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Birmingham to repair a Grade 3 turf toe, according to sources. The procedure could be delayed if swelling does not subside. Recovery is projected at three months. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Norman Waldrop, a foot and ankle specialist trained under Dr. Robert Anderson.

Burrow’s Absence Leaves Bengals in Limbo

The sight of their franchise cornerstone struggling to exit the field rattled both teammates and fans, especially with no official update yet from the Bengals’ medical staff about the time period of the injury. Burrow later underwent an MRI, with Fox19’s Joe Danneman reporting, “Source: Joe Burrow just finished in the MRI room. Was using a one-legged scooter to get back to the locker room with his left leg propped up as to not put any weight on it.”

In Burrow’s absence, backup quarterback Jake Browning was thrust into action, tasked with leading an offense already unsettled by Jacksonville’s defensive pressure. Browning showed flashes but lacked the command Bengals fans have grown accustomed to from Burrow.

The injury looms large not only for the game itself but also for Cincinnati’s season outlook. Since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2020, Burrow has been the heartbeat of the franchise, orchestrating playoff pushes and even a Super Bowl appearance in 2022. As one team representative said earlier this year, “Joe’s our leader, and we need him out there.”
