Alyssa Thomas Creates WNBA Record, Surpasses Caitlin Clark to Rule All-Time Single-Season Assists Charts

Saturday's performance pushed Thomas' assist average to 9.2 apg.

Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas set a season-leading assists record during their 87-84 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Saturday. The six-time WNBA All-Star recorded 10 assists to total for 342 assists in the ongoing season, and thus claiming the assists crown. With this, she surpassed the previous record held by Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark in the last season with 337 assists. Thomas created the record in the last two seasons with 317 assists in 2024 and 316 in 2023.

The 11-year veteran entered the game needing just six assists to create a new league record, and it didn’t take much for her to claim it. By halftime, Thomas had already scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out eight assists while shooting 4-of-11 from the field numbers. Owing to this, the Mercury entered the second half with a 50-47 lead over their lower-seeded counterparts.

Following her performance on Saturday, Thomas has raised her season average to 9.2 assists per game, which is the second highest all-time behind Chicago Sky’s Courtney Vandersloot. The 33-year-old scored 14 points and eight rebounds on Saturday, and is now averaging 15.9 points, 9.2 assists and 9 rebounds across 37 appearances in her first season with the Mercury.

Sami Whitcomb Hails Alyssa Thomas a ‘Dynamic Facilitator Player’

As Thomas added another feather to her already illustrated resume, her teammate Sami Whitcomb heaped praise on her. Whitcomb, who finished Saturday’s game with 13 points, one rebound and one assist, hailed Thomas a ‘dynamic facilitator player’ saying that she has a big influence on their playing style. Whitcomb also talked about Thomas’ new record and said that it doesn’t come as a surprise that she has achieved it.

“She’s a dynamic facilitator player all of that. She obviously creates a lot of fantastic looks for us,” the Mercury guard told WNBA reporter Aya Abdeen. She added, “It’s a big part of what how we play, the style that we play the balls in our hands a lot. We trust her to make the right pass, and it’s our job to knock it down, and we’re going to continue to try and do that the best that we can moving into playoffs. That’s an incredible accomplishment, and we’re not really surprised.”

Talking about the game, the loss ended the Mercury’s six-game winning streak and blew their hopes of claiming the second seed in the playoffs. They have two regular season games remaining, Phoenix sits fourth in the standings with a 27-15 win-loss record. They are 0.5 games behind the Las Vegas Aces and one game behind the Atlanta Dream.

In their next and last regular season home game, the Mercury will host the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday, September 9.
