Fever Guard Sophie Cunningham Risks Another Fine with her Strong Message for WNBA Officials

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been very vocal about her opinions. She knows how to take a stand for her teammates and speak against what she feels isn’t right. Due to her fearless attitude, the 29-year-old has time and again found herself in hot waters, receiving fines by the league. But, the Missouri alum seems to remain unbothered about it. Once again, Sophie Cunningham gave strong message to WNBA officials, risking herself another punishment.

The former Phoenix Mercury star, who moved to the Fever before the 2025 season, defended her teammate Lexie Hull on her podcast Show Me Something. Notably, Hull has had multiple hits in the head in recent games, resulting in two black eyes. Speaking about the same, Cunningham blamed the officials for not taking control of the game and allowing players to get away with their actions.

She said, “I think if I say the word ‘ref’ on this podcast, I’m gonna get fined, so I might as well just go balls to the wall. What really pissed me off about last week are three things, and again I was high on meds, but it still triggered my hate for the refs.” The seventh-year guard is very well aware of the possible result considering she has already been fined by the league. Cunningham has paid a $1,500 fine and a $500 fine for mocking WNBA officials on her podcast and a social media post.

‘Get Out of Here’ – Cunningham Bashes Sports Commentator Skip Bayless

Cunningham, who was ruled out of the 2025 season due to an MCL injury a few weeks ago, engaged in a heated exchange with sports broadcaster Skip Bayless. Recently, Bayless labelled Cunningham a “clout chaser” because the player is very active on social media, and often shares glimpses of her life with her followers. On his social media account, Bayless posted, “Sophie Cunningham is a shrewd operator. She can really play the game within the game — the social media game, the get-famous game.”

Cunningham didn’t take much time to react to the comment and bashed Bayless for the same on her podcast. She said, “Skip, who’s the clout chaser? You’re literally using my name as a headline so people click on it.”

The 2025 Commissioner’s Cup champion added, “I don’t mind the guy! I have no beef with you, I’ve never met you. I’ve actually really never listened to ya. Someone sent it to me and i was like: What is this? He’s calling me a clout chaser. Dude you’re the one who has my name plastered all over your freaking YouTube that had 36 views. Like get out of here.”

Though Cunningham could be fined, she has once again proved why she earned fans’ love and admiration.
