Golden State Valkyries Playoff Chances: Can the Newcomers Hold Off Rivals and Clinch a Spot in the WNBA Postseason?

The Golden State Valkyries have resurged after a disappointing mid-season campaign. They are in a direct fight with the Los Angeles Sparks, Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty for a playoff spot.

A resurgence following the WNBA All-Star break has positioned them in a relatively advantageous place for playoffs qualification relative to their other competitors. The issue for the Valkyries has centered on their inconsistencies when facing the top teams in the league.

Against the underperforming teams, the Valkyries have delivered thorough defeats on a consistent basis. However, their performance becomes erratic when confronting teams such as the Minnesota Lynx and the Atlanta Dream. Among the remaining four games, the Golden State faces two contests against the league leaders.

Injuries and fatigue are surfacing on a regular basis, thereby diminishing their post-season credentials even further. Ahead of their matchup with the Dallas Wings on Thursday, the Golden State Valkyries are without Tiffany Hayes and Cecilia Zandalasini due to injuries. Both the players are among core players, and have been out since weeks.

Valkyries’ Home Strength Offsets Road Woes

While solid at home with a 13-7 record, Valkyries have struggled on the road. They have secured just nine wins while suffering 11 losses in games played on away courts this season. The current 6th seed will need to tighten their perimeter defense, switching more aggressively and improving help-side coverage could reduce open shots.

The bench players likewise require providing contributions on a more reliable basis throughout the games. Rotating younger players with fresh legs might help sustain energy late in games, and reduce the overall risk of injuries, and fatigue in the squad.

The Golden State Valkyries as of September 4 are sitting at the 6th position in the table with a 22-18 record. Coming off a four game winning streak, they face the Dallas Wings on Thursday. ESPNs Basketball Power Index gives them a 99.7% chance for WNBA playoffs qualification.

They are projected to end up as either the 6th seed or the 7th seed, potentially facing the Atlanta Dream, Phoenix Mercury, or the surging Las Vegas Aces in the postseason.
