Chelsea defender has caused fresh speculation over his future after wiping all references to the club from his Instagram account. The move comes despite recent assurances from manager Enzo Maresca that the player remains part of his plans. As a result, the incident has left supporters puzzled over the defender’s long-term role at Stamford Bridge.
The player in question here is Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana. The French defender fuelled speculation over his future after deleting all references to the club from his Instagram account on Wednesday. The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2022 for an initial £70m. However, Fofana has endured a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge due to repeated injuries that have severely restricted his playing time.

Wesley Fofana’s decision to remove Chelsea content comes just days after manager Enzo Maresca publicly stated that Fofana was part of his plans moving forward. Fofana has been plagued by injuries since arriving at Chelsea, making only 34 appearances across three seasons.

Last season, he featured just 14 times in all competitions and was not registered for either the Conference League or the Club World Cup squads. While Fofana returned to the bench for the Chelsea’s season-opening Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, Maresca revealed the Frenchman was only included for morale and was not expected to feature.
Speaking after that match, Maresca had said,
“Wes was on the bench but was just on the bench to be with us and the plan was for him not to get any minutes. Now hopefully for the next one, we can use Wes for some minutes.”

Despite those assurances, Fofana’s social media activity has raised concerns among fans. Notably, he still retains posts from his time at Leicester City, Saint-Étienne, and the French national team, while all Chelsea-related content has been removed. However, sources close to the player have downplayed suggestions of a rift, insisting that there is no conflict with Chelsea and that the changes were part of a broader adjustment to his online profile.
