Indiana Fever clarify ankle bruise amid ongoing absence
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever found themselves back in the headlines on Wednesday, though not for the reasons fans had hoped. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year has now missed 13 straight games, and reports surfaced of another injury complicating her road to recovery.
According to Fever reporter Scott Agness, Caitlin Clark sustained an ankle injury on August 7. The setback, described as a “very mild” bone bruise on her left ankle, had gone unreported until this week. The update immediately drew attention, given the guard’s extended absence from the lineup due to a lingering groin issue.
Fever reporter Chloe Peterson later confirmed Agness’s account and added that the ankle concern is not expected to alter Clark’s recovery schedule. She explained that the primary issue remains the groin injury, which has sidelined the 23-year-old for more than a month.

Peterson also revealed that the Fever released a statement addressing the matter. A team spokesperson attempted to clarify the situation, noting that no specific date had ever been projected for Clark’s return.
“There was no timeline or projected return to play so it’s impossible to say if it was impacted,” the spokesperson said, via Peterson. “So it remains the same: to give Caitlin Clark as much time as needed to ensure she comes back fully healthy, which everyday she is working hard to do.”
The comment officially confirmed the ankle bruise but stopped short of stating whether it has played any role in delaying Clark’s comeback. Instead, the response left the issue open to interpretation, underlining the ongoing uncertainty around her availability.
For the Fever, the situation means Clark’s status remains unclear with the season moving into a decisive stretch. While the team hopes to see her back before the playoffs, the lack of a set timeline and the addition of an ankle problem could complicate her recovery.
