Cam Ward Leading From the Front – Quarterback’s Aggression in Practice Wins Hearts of Teammates Following Scuffle With Jeffery Simmons

This year’s number one overall pick is showing what it means to be a leader of men. Tennessee Titans’ rookie quarterback Cam Ward is not only holding his players accountable for their mistakes at training camp, but also setting the right tone for his teammates to follow.

The Titans, who finished with a 3-14 record last season and were at the bottom of the NFL standings, need more leadership to push the team in the right direction.

Ward and Simmons Engage in a Scuffle During Practice

On a hot Monday, Titans’ signal caller Cam Ward and veteran defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons found themselves in a scuffle after a pass-play that ended with wide receiver Calvin Ridley in the endzone for a touchdown.

As Ward started towards Ridley and his offensive teammates to celebrate, he stopped midway and shoved Simmons. He then followed it up by executing his trademark “Zombieland” celebration, angering the 300-pound defender. Simmons reacted with a two-handed shove to the rookie’s face mask, which resulted in the offensive line running to their signal caller’s defense.

With the practice session nearly over, Simmons walked off the field while Ward continued for the remaining two plays. Even though it may still be training camp, players are battling for spots on the final 53-man roster, and everyone is trying to one-up the other, which brings out the best even among teammates.

Teammates Rally to Ward’s Defense

While a certain level of aggression is understandable, when things get heated towards the quarterback, the situation has to be de-escalated immediately. Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. was crystal clear when asked about allowing anyone to touch the QB.

“Absolutely not. That goes without saying.”

Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. also lauded both players’ aggressive mentality, but expressed caution when it comes to protecting the team’s most important player.

“You get that same attitude, confidence, that same edge every day out of those two guys. That’s what you expect. But when it does happen with the quarterback, you got to break it up as soon as possible. But brothers fight.”

Brownlee also praised Ward, adding, “You never want to see your quarterback in the middle of those kinds of things. But when it does happen, it shows you the kind of dog he has in him. He ain’t going to take nothing.”

The incident between the two players can be ruled as nothing more than competitive fire among two tough competitors. The Titans will need more of this spirit during their games this season as they look to bounce back to winning ways.
