Manchester United Consider Shock Return for David de Gea

Abhinav Goel

Manchester United are reportedly considering a sensational move to bring back former goalkeeper David de Gea after another costly mistake in goal at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim’s side fell 1-0 to Arsenal in their Premier League opener, with Altay Bayindir’s error gifting Riccardo Calafiori the decisive goal.

With Onana’s future uncertain and Bayindir failing to convince, United’s number-one spot is again under the spotlight. This has led to fresh speculation over a move for de Gea. Bayindir was handed the starting role despite Onana recovering from a hamstring problem that kept him out of pre-season. Amorim opted to start the Turkish keeper over Andre Onana but the gamble backfired.

Bayindir’s weak punch in the first half allowed Calafiori to nod Arsenal into the lead, which proved decisive. Asked post-match whether veteran Tom Heaton should have been considered instead, Amorim dismissed the suggestion, but the pressure on his goalkeeping choices has only intensified. The defeat was made more painful given United’s wastefulness in attack.

Manchester United eye shock David de Gea return

According to The Sun, United are exploring a potential reunion with de Gea, who left Old Trafford in 2023 after 12 years at the club. The Spaniard is currently at Fiorentina and is said to have a release clause in his contract that could make the deal financially feasible. The veteran goalkeeper joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and went on to make 545 appearances for the Red Devils.

De Gea, a four-time club Player of the Year, would be seen as a stabilising presence in a position that has become a headache for United since his departure. Alongside him, PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma has also been linked, with Amorim keen to ensure the goalkeeping department is strengthened before the transfer window closes.

For now, Amorim has backed both Onana and Bayindir. But with United targeting a return to the Champions League places, Ruben Amorim will have to sort out the goalkeeping situation as soon as possible.
