Manchester United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford, but manager Ruben Amorim praised his side for showing greater courage and attacking intent. Calafiori Punishes United Error

The game’s decisive moment came midway through the first half, when Altay Bayindir’s misplaced clearance fell into the path of Riccardo Calafiori. The Arsenal defender capitalised on the gift, slotting home what would prove to be the only goal of the match. Despite that setback, Amorim’s men continued to push forward, spurred on by their revamped attack.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo caused constant problems for the Arsenal backline, combining for nine of United’s 22 attempts on goal. Substitute Benjamin Sesko also came close, but David Raya produced a string of superb saves – seven in total – to preserve a clean sheet for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Amorim Applauds Brave Display, Keane Slams Low Standards

In his post-match comments, Amorim highlighted the positives of United’s display despite the result. “We weren’t boring, we were brave and we tried to impose ourselves,” the Portuguese coach said, stressing the improvements in aggression and intent compared to last season.

However, not everyone was impressed. Former captain Roy Keane, speaking on Sky Sports, criticised the lowering of expectations at Old Trafford. While acknowledging the improved performance, he insisted that United “cannot celebrate good defeats” and must demand more if they are to close the gap to the Premier League’s elite.

United Aim to Convert Promise Into Points

For United, the defeat highlighted both progress and shortcomings. Their attacking play showed greater fluency and invention, but wasteful finishing and defensive lapses proved costly. Arsenal, meanwhile, demonstrated resilience and capitalised ruthlessly on their best chance of the game.
