Summer signing Hugo Ekitike wasted no time making an impression in front of the Anfield faithful. Signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, the 22-year-old forward looked sharp from the outset. He stretched Bournemouth’s defence with clever runs and quick link-up play.

Midway through the first half, the game was brought to a halt as Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo reported a racist comment from the crowd to referee Anthony Taylor. The referee followed Premier League anti-discrimination protocol.

He stopped play to inform both benches, that is the coaches, and captains. The incident drew immediate condemnation from pundits, commentators, and the fans. Gary Neville labelled it ‘despicable’. Meanwhile Jamie Carragher described it as ‘shocking’.

Despite the distressing moment, Semenyo showed remarkable resolve. His resilience showed through as he scored twice in the second half to pull Bournemouth level. It went in vain though as Liverpool regained control through late goals from Federico Chiesa and Salah.

VAR Controversy Begins Again

The match’s first flashpoint arrived just 14 minutes in when Marcos Senesi appeared to handle the ball to prevent Ekitike from breaking through on goal. Referee Taylor allowed play to continue, and after review, VAR ruled that it was not a deliberate handball.
