“He’s Better Than Mahomes” – Simon Hunter Says Bills’ Josh Allen More Primed for Super Bowl Than Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes

Rudra Dubey

Simon Hunter sparks a QB debate, putting Josh Allen ahead of Patrick Mahomes.

Simon Hunter isn’t shying away from bold takes. On The Favorites Podcast, the NFL analyst declared that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is “primed to outplay Mahomes and get into the Super Bowl” this season, even with Allen’s 0-4 playoff record against Patrick Mahomes. “He knows he’s better than Mahomes,” Hunter said. “We all know this but again, I had him at three, you had him at two, and we all put him [Allen] above him [Mahomes], because he wins when it matters.”

Hunter believes Allen’s offseason work ethic could tip the balance in January. The Bills star, coming off an MVP-winning 2024 season with limited receiving help, is pushing to not just match Mahomes in the regular season but finally surpass him in the postseason. The playoff record still favors Mahomes, yet Allen’s all-around skill set has placed him in the same conversation as the Chiefs’ three-time Super Bowl champion.

Debate Over NFL’s Top QB Reignites Ahead of 2025 Season

While some Bills fans echo Hunter’s faith, others argue Allen needs to beat Mahomes in a playoff game, and preferably win a Super Bowl, before claiming the crown. Bill Simmons is firmly in Hunter’s camp. “I did not have Patrick Mahomes at the top of the pyramid,” Simmons said. “I just think Josh Allen’s the best quarterback in the league. Game by game, regular season, durability. He can make chicken salad out of chicken [expletive].”

Simmons pointed to Mahomes’ 2024 campaign, where the Chiefs missed the Super Bowl, as reason to give Allen the edge. However, Sports Illustrated noted Mahomes dealt with his own roster challenges, missing Rashee Rice and Marquis Brown for much of the season while tight end Travis Kelce showed signs of decline.

Still, Mahomes’ resume is a towering obstacle in this debate. The Chiefs’ leader has been to five Super Bowls, winning three, while Allen has yet to reach one. Since 2020, Mahomes and Kansas City have ended Buffalo’s season four times, as the Chiefs act as the Bills’ postseason kryptonite.

Allen’s talent and regular-season production are hard to dispute. His MVP run showed he can lead a roster without an abundance of support. But until he beats Mahomes in the playoffs and lifts a Lombardi Trophy, the “best QB in the league” debate will remain more about potential than proof.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
