Champions League Glory at Last for PSG After Years of Heartbreak

After more than a decade of heartbreak and near-misses, Paris Saint-Germain finally scaled Europe’s tallest footballing peak and they did it in emphatic fashion. On Saturday night at the Allianz Arena, PSG thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 UEFA Champions League final to clinch their first-ever title in the competition.

The road to this triumph has been anything but smooth for the French giants. Despite significant investments over the past decade, including marquee signings like Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappe, continental success remained elusive for PSG. However, it finally arrived on Saturday after years of misery.

Years of Heartbreak for PSG

Since the 2014–15 season, PSG have endured heartbreak after heartbreak at the hands of Europe’s elite. Let’s take a look at the Parisan club’s exits from Champions League in the last 10 years:

2014–15 – Eliminated by Barcelona

Following successive last-16 exits in 2022 and 2023, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi dramatically shifted the club’s recruitment policy. Out went the big money signings, and in came a more sustainable, balanced squad led by the experienced hand of Luis Enrique. The results followed swiftly. After reaching the semifinals last season, PSG went one step further this year and finally opened their account.

Against Inter Milan, PSG were relentless. Goals came in waves as they dismantled the Serie A side with ruthlessness. The 5-0 scoreline marked one of the most dominant final performances in Champions League history and brought France its first UCL title since Marseille’s in 1993.
