PSG have created history as they pulled off a record-breaking 5-0 win against Inter Milan in the Champions League final. However, a key focus lied on the Italian goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been a mainstay for the Parisian side. Interestingly, Gianluigi Donnarumma has a visible scar on his right cheek, which has caught the attention of many.

Now the question remains: how did Donnarumma get the scar on his cheek? The incident took place on 18th December 2024, when PSG took on AS Monaco in the Ligue 1. The goalie had a huge clash against Monaco player Wilfried Singo while attempting to stop a charge in the goal.

As Wilfried Singo tried to dodge past Donarumma, his boot caught the goalie’s face, which led to a huge gash on his face. Naturally, with such a huge injury, there was no way that Gianluigi Donnarumma could continue on the pitch. He was immediately subbed off and needed medical attention. According to reports, the goalkeeper needed 10 staples on his face to stop the wound.

Even with such a huge injury, Donarumma went on to miss just a solitary game for PSG. He joined training on 2nd January and featured against Monaco on 5th January in the Trophée des Champions.

Singo’s Apology and Donnarumma’s Response

There was a huge debate among the fans and pundits after the horrific accident. While the match referee François Letexier didn’t issue a second yellow card to the Monaco player, PSGH manager Luis Enrique was far from being pleased. He went on to vent his frustrations by claiming, “The refereeing decisions? I can’t do anything… the players don’t intend to hurt. It’s difficult to referee this kind of match.”

Singo was apologetic after the incident. He went on to claim that he did not intentionally want to foul the player. “My gesture was obviously not intentional… I wish you a good recovery,” Singo added. Donnarumma told the media that he was good and was en route to making a fast recovery. “I’m good, I recover very well.”

Back Stronger Than Ever

Despite the accident, Gianluigi Donnarumma came back strongly and went on to produce some mind-boggling performances. He was exceptional as PSG crossed off Liverpool and Arsenal in their journey to the final. In the final, their performance only bettered as they didn’t seem at all hazed when they defeated Inter Milan to lift their maiden Champions League trophy.
