Aston Villa Hit by Major Injury Setback in Champions League Race

Abhinav Goel

The timing of the injury could not have been any worse for Aston Villa, who are battling to secure a Champions League berth.

Aston Villa’s hopes for a spot in next season’s Champions League have suffered a major blow, with striker Marcus Rashford expected to miss the remainder of the campaign due to a hamstring injury. The on-loan forward, who joined Villa from Manchester United in January, has been an important figure in Unai Emery’s side, contributing four goals and six assists during his short stay at Villa Park.

However, Rashford was absent from Villa’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace, and further assessments have revealed the hamstring issue could sideline him until the end of the season. Rashford will now focus on recovering in time for England’s matches in June – a World Cup qualifier against Andorra and a friendly against Senegal.

Rahford’s Injury Big Blow for Villa

Villa, currently sitting seventh in the Premier League table with 57 points from 34 matches, are just three points adrift of fifth-placed Chelsea. The timing of the injury could not have been any worse for Aston Villa, who are battling to secure a Champions League berth. Rashford’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in their attack at a crucial point in the campaign. With just a few games left this season, Emery will be forced to reshuffle his attacking options and hope other attackers step up to fill the void left by Rashford’s absence.

Villa do have an option to make Rashford’s loan move permanent this summer for a fee of about £40 million. However, the injury could complicate Aston Villa’s decision-making. While the English international showed glimpses of his quality, Villa must now weigh his long-term fitness before triggering the buyout clause.

Notably. Rashford was recalled by England in Thomas Tuchel’s first squad as manager in March after having been omitted from the Euro 2024 squad.
