Manic Monday sees crucial Round of 32 action on the men’s side, and Round of 16 matches on the WTA Tour at the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open. Several top stars such as Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jack Draper are set to feature. However, tennis fans worldwide were left dumbstruck when play was temporarily suspended on all courts at La Caja Magica. What happened?

The Mutua Madrid Open is among the biggest tournaments of the year, and it is a 1000-event on both ATP and WTA circuits. Andrey Rublev and Iga Swiatek are the defending champions at the 2025 competition. However, Rafael Nadal is the most successful player at the Spanish capital – with five trophies. With this year being the first clay court season without the Spanish icon, it will be interesting to see who makes the red dirt their own.

Play Suspended at 2025 Madrid Open Due to Massive Power Outage

Grigor Dimitrov and Jacob Fearnley were busy competing in their Round-3 encounter on Monday, when there was a sudden turn of events. While on the brink of victory, Dimitrov was broken and the British starlet saved match point in his attempt to bounce back into the contest. This is when the players were forced off court when a loss of power resulted in the scoreboards and cameras going off.

There has reportedly been a huge power outage in parts of Spain and Portugal, which has also affected the capital city. According to a statement by the ATP Tour, two singles matches and a doubles face-off were underway when power was lost at 12:34PM local time. Play will not resume until 3:30PM at the very least due to the power cuts across the countries.
