Jalen Chatfield Scores First Goal for Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 Victory Over New Jersey Devils

Anamika Shrivastava

Chatfield opens scoring for Carolina in Game 1 against the Devils, igniting a dominant Hurricanes performance in the playoff opener.

In the opening game of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes showcased their dominance with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Lenovo Center in Raleigh. Logan Stankoven, a recent acquisition from the Dallas Stars, was instrumental in the win, netting two goals in the second period. Jalen Chatfield initiated the scoring early in the first period, while Andrei Svechnikov sealed the game with an empty-net goal. Goaltender Frederik Andersen contributed significantly with 23 saves, including a remarkable diving stick save in the third period.

The Devils faced challenges throughout the game, struggling to generate offensive momentum. Their sole goal came from Nico Hischier during a 4-on-4 late in the second period. Despite goaltender Jacob Markstrom’s commendable 41 saves, the Devils couldn’t overcome the Hurricanes’ relentless pressure. Carolina’s aggressive start, taking 11 of the game’s first 13 shots, set the tone for their comprehensive performance.

The Hurricanes couldn’t have asked for a better start to the series. From the opening puck drop, they played with energy, structure, and confidence, everything the Devils struggled to find. With key players missing, New Jersey has its back against the wall heading into Game 2. But playoffs hockey is unpredictable, and one strong response can shift the momentum. With this win, the Hurricanes lead the series 1-0 and will aim to extend their advantage in Game 2 on Tuesday.

To my readers: Hockey is more than just a game—it’s the highs, the heartbreaks, and the moments that make us jump off our seats. So, keep cheering, keep debating, and never stop loving the madness of the sport!
