Pep Guardiola Eyes Barcelona Midfielder As Kevin De Bruyne’s Successor in a Summer Swoop That Could Shatter British Transfer Records.
Manchester City are reportedly preparing a record-breaking summer swoop for Barcelona’s midfield sensation Pedri. As per the Spanish media outlet Fichajes, the Premier League side are preparing a staggering €200 million (£171 million) bid for the Spanish midfield maestro.
Pedri is being widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders in world football. Especially considering how essential he has become to Barcelona’s success. Man City are ready to “break the market” to secure the services of the 21-year-old.

So far, Pedri has already racked up nearly 200 appearances for Barcelona. Man City are targeting him as a long-term replacement to Kevin De Bruyne under Pep Guardiola. With the Belgian set to depart at the end of this season in June, City’s need for a creative player in the engine room has intensified.

City had previously been linked with Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. However, as per reports, the German star’s camp held ‘secret talks’ with Bayern Munich. Hence, making a move to Manchester less likely. This may be the reason why Pep Guardiola has shifted his focus entirely to Pedri.
Guardiola’s appreciation for technically brilliant midfielders is well-documented from his Barcelona days. And Pedri fits this mold quite perfectly. The 2021 Golden Boy winner has tallied 5 goals and 7 assists in 49 appearances this season. Whereas, his absence has created problems several times in the midfield.
There’s no doubt that City won’t have any financial problem. However, even so, acquiring Pedri will be no straightforward task. The Catalan club consider him as an ‘untouchable’ player. Hence, there is very little to no chance of entertaining any offers for him.
Additionally, Pedri himself has not expressed any desire to leave Camp Nou either. Barcelona consider Pedri a central figure not just for the present, but also for the long haul under Hansi Flick. Talking about Pedri, Flick previously said, “You can’t compare him to anyone else in his position right now.”
