The 2025 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is nearing its culmination, with semifinals action successfully completed on Saturday. Holger Rune vs Karen Khachanov

Both players came into the tournament on the back of a disappointing outing at the Principality. Both Khachanov and Rune started the match in strong style – holding their opening three service games. With Rune adopting a defensive return position, it was challenging for Khachanov to find free points. In the seventh game of the set, the No. 6 seed broke to love, and subsequently held to love, to go up 5-3. He then nailed some phenomenal groundstrokes to take the opening set 6-3.

In the second set, the Russian came out with newfound determination. However, Rune managed to serve brilliantly which enabled him to stay strong on serve. He did not face a single break point all match, and hit 20 winners en route to a famous win. He broke Khachanov to love in his opening service game, and finished the match with another break of serve. The Dane dismissed Khachanov in just over an hour, and confirmed a spot in the final as well as a Top-10 re-entry.

Result: Rune def. Khachanov 6-3 6-2.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Arthur Fils

In Saturday’s main event clash, Arthur Fils was on his redemption arc after suffering a gut wrenching defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in Monte Carlo. A week later, he looked to turn things around at the Catalonian capital. However, it was Spanish domination right from the onset of this marquee clash. Alcaraz thumped nearly 75% first serves in, winning 77% of these and saving 100% break points.

While many assumed that Fils would learn from his defeat at the Principality, it was actually Alcaraz who was two steps ahead. The former World No. 1 was extremely comfortable returning serve, and broke Fils twice in Set-1 and once in Set-2 to confirm another finals qualification. “Let’s see if tomorrow we will end the day with the trophy,” he proclaimed after the win.

Result: Alcaraz def. Fils 6-2 6-4.

The 2025 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell final will be played between Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune on Sunday. While the Spaniard leads the face-off 2-1, this will be the first final between them.
