Down 4–0 From First Leg, What Must BVB Do To Seek Historic Revival Against Unbeaten Barcelona?

Borussia Dortmund have an enormous uphill battle if they want to avoid elimination from this Champions League term. They have the overwhelming task of overturning a massive 4-0 first-leg deficit against Barcelona. However, the second leg is set to unfold at their home, Signal Iduna Park.

Now, even with the huge expected yellow and black brigade who are sure to flood the stadium on the day, Niko Kovac’s side would need nothing short of a miracle. Especially considering Barcelona’s current form, they would need something extraordinary to reach the semi-finals in this campaign.

The Odds and the Obstacles

Barcelona dominated the first leg, courtesy of clinical strikes from Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The Catalan sids are unbeaten in all competitions since the turn of this year. If that wasn’t enough, they arrive in Dortmund knowing that they can afford a three-goal loss.

And they would still go through to the semis. No team has ever progressed to the UCL next round after losing 4-0 in the first leg to Barcelona. Well, that is, except Barcelona themselves, who overturned a similar deficit against PSG in 2017. Even so, it seems Kovac remains hopeful as he said:

“We want to show a completely different face tomorrow than in the first leg and win the game.” However, the records are not exactly in their favour as Dortmund have never beaten Barcelona in their six previous meetings. In their previous meeting this season in the group stage, they lost 3-2 at Signal Iduna Park.

What Dortmund Must Do

Dortmund’s glimmer of hope lies in their recent form. Even though they’ve registered two consecutive Bundesliga defeats against Augsburg and Leipzig, they responded well with a strong 3-1 win over Mainz. Additionally those two defeats were the only ones in their last nine matches in all competitions. This includes a gritty 2-1 comeback win over Lille in the Champions League Round of 16.

Their star striker Serhou Guirassy has been a big help in this case. He has scored 25 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League matches. His form will be vital if Dortmund are to pull off the impossible. Injuries could complicate the mission. Captain Emre Can is doubtful due to ongoing muscular problems, but Felix Nmecha might step in.

Signal Iduna Park: Fortress or False Hope?

While Dortmund boast one of the most electrifying home atmospheres in Europe, they’ve failed to beat Barcelona in all three previous home meetings. The Yellow Wall will be in full voice, and Kovac knows how vital that support will be: “We have to be there from the first minute tomorrow and get the fans on our side.”
