New captain, same goal.

Captain America! Aaron Judge will lead Team USA into the 2026 World Baseball Classic as its new captain, a role previously held by Mike Trout. The announcement was made by manager Mark DeRosa during a special segment on MLB Network, where he also shared that Judge was the very first player to commit to the 2026 roster.

Taking the baton from Trout, Judge made it clear he holds deep respect for the three-time MVP, especially after learning Trout personally endorsed the decision.

“That’s what it’s all about, the recognition from your peers, especially from Mike Trout,” Judge said during the live broadcast. “He’s the best player in the game and has been since I came into the league and before I came into the league. I’m still hoping he’s on the team. He better be out there patrolling the outfield with me.”

Aaron Judge’s leadership will mark his first appearance for Team USA on the international stage, as he spearheads the effort to capture gold after the U.S. fell just short in 2023. That tournament ended with a dramatic final at-bat where Trout struck out against his former Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani, sealing Japan’s victory in the 2023 WBC finale.

The transition from Trout to Judge is less a passing of the torch and more of a shared legacy between two generational stars. Judge, already a two-time American League MVP with six All-Star appearances and four Silver Sluggers, brings his signature presence and poise to the captaincy. Meanwhile, Trout’s resume speaks for itself – three MVPs, 11 All-Star selections, and nine Silver Sluggers.

While it remains to be seen whether Trout will take the field again for Team USA in 2026, Judge made his hopes loud and clear. For him, sharing the outfield with Trout isn’t just a wish, it’s part of the dream.

Team USA will aim to rewrite the ending this time around, with Judge at the helm and a hungry roster set on redemption.
