“It’s Been the Worst for Me”: Jazz Chisholm Jr. and the Cold Are Not Friends

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is a force to be reckoned with on any given day, but there’s one thing the Bahamian-born star simply can’t handle – cold weather.

Jazz Chisholm, who grew up in the warmth of the Bahamas, has struggled in the chilly temperatures in Detroit and New York the past week. With the Yankees enduring a tough stretch in frigid weather, Jazz Chisholm found himself struggling to find his rhythm at the plate, mirroring his team’s own challenges.

Sunday, however, Jazz Chisholm showed a spark of what he’s capable of, snapping a brutal 0-for-24 slump with a solo home run off San Francisco Giants’ reliever Tyler Rogers in the eighth inning, though the Yankees still fell short in a 5-4 loss.

“It’s been the worst for me,” Chisholm admitted, reflecting on the tough stretch. “I’m from the Bahamas, I’m used to the warm weather. That’s probably the coldest I’ve ever played in, this past week. Especially to go six games in a row like that. But at the end of the day, this is my job, and this is what I’m paid to do, go out there.”

The cold temperature has certainly impacted Chisholm’s play. The conditions in New York have dipped to the 20s and 30s in recent days, making it difficult for the speedster to stay warm and perform at his best. Despite his discomfort, he remains focused on doing his job, no matter the weather.

“In my contract, it doesn’t say I don’t play in less than 40 degrees, so I gotta go out there and do my best every day.”

How Is Jazz Chisholm Jr. Dealing With the Cold Weather?

The Yankees’ early-season road trip, which took them through Pittsburgh and Detroit, hasn’t helped Chisholm’s situation, but he found a way to cope.

“A lot of Vaseline – shoutout Vaseline, send me some,” Chisholm laughed, sharing his secret to staying warm. “A lot of hot stuff from out of the training room. Go in the hot tub before the game. Layers of creams. It’s just a lot. It’s a lot to go out there and play in the cold, but hey, this is our job and this is what we gotta go do. There’s no excuses.”

Jazz Chisholm Jr., asked about adjusting to cold weather, said he goes in the hot tub before chilly games, wears extra layers, uses "hot stuff" from the training room and "a lot of Vaseline."

Though he hasn’t found his stride consistently, Chisholm’s home run on Sunday marked his fifth of the season in just 15 games. It was also his first since April 3, signaling that he’s starting to warm up, both literally and figuratively.

“He’s gonna get hot, I feel like,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone before the game. “But I do feel like the weather’s probably had a little bit of an effect on him here, especially the last several days.”
