Is There an End to James Dolan and the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s Long Time Ongoing Battle?

If you are a fan of the New York Knicks, it is impossible not to know who James Dolan is. He’s the owner of NBA’s New York Knicks and NHL’s New York Rangers and has been running the teams since 1999. He is one of the most famous owners across the globe and part of it is because New York is one of the biggest markets in the world, and anybody who buys the Knicks will always be in the limelight since they are and always will be the ‘Mecca of Basketball.’

Another reason to Dolan’s fame is because he is one of the most controversial owners we’ve ever seen. More often than not, Dolan is on the wrong side of the news, and there have been multiple instances where fans, analysts, and all the people watching have questioned Dolan’s ways of conducting business.

Dolan has been involved in many controversies including the time when Charles Oakley, who played for the Knicks, was banned from the Madison Square Garden (home of the Knicks and the Rangers). He was dragged out by the security guards, or how about the time when Spike Lee went into a little tiff with Nolan and the Garden’s security team for entering the arena from the wrong side.

Dolan was also pressed by the entire NBA world for not releasing any kind of a statement on George Floyd’s killing. And also the time where Dolan was kicking out fans for simply criticizing him for being a bad owner.

There are countless other incidents where Dolan has been involved, resulting in a lot of eyebrows being raised. Now most recently, Dolan has taken up a lot of issue with the NBA and commissioner Adam Silver. Let’s find out more.

Why is James Dolan Not a Fan of the NBA?

Dolan, the owner of the Knicks and the Rangers, is unhappy with the NBA’s rules and how they affect his team. He is not a big fan of the Knicks, one of the big-market teams of the NBA and North American sports, having to share money with smaller market teams. Dolan also wants more control over his team’s businesses like who gets into the Madison Square Garden, how the reporters cover the Knicks and more. He’s clashed with the NBA over hiring decisions and thinks that the league keeps on bothering the Knicks too much, like the time when they looked into a coach’s promotion.

Dolan has also expressed concerns over the NBA’s new TV deals, which is set to give more games to national channels over the local ones like his MSG Networks. This could potentially hurt Dolan’s profits, especially since MSG Networks is already in debt. Dolan also thinks that the NBA is not open about its plans and spending.

While some agree with the Knicks’ owner regarding the NBA’s new TV deal hurting the local TV, there are others who think otherwise. Dolan might even sue the NBA if things don’t go his way, and people who know him say that the Dolan is not the one to back down from a fight, as we have seen on multiple occasions.

Every meeting that Dolan and the NBA’s board of directors have, reportedly turns into a barrage of complaints by Dolan and that will not stop anytime soon. He’s clearly not afraid to challenge commissioner Adam Silver and critic the way the NBA functions.

NBA’s new TV deals has also become a little bit of a problem for the fans, as many complain that the League Pass subscription of the NBA, doesn’t air many of the small market teams’ matches at times and thus comes the problems with NBA’s viewership numbers this year. However, that is another topic for another day.

While Dolan could be right to openly oppose the NBA for some of the actions that they take, fact remains that the Knicks’ owner is still one of the most controversial figures around the league and in the U.S. At least for now he’s doing a good job handling the Knicks, who after years of rebuilding and struggles, have finally started to come to life.
