The deal, carrying a $9 million average annual value, cements Chychrun as one of the highest-paid defensemen in the league. This contract had been in the works for some time, with speculation surrounding Washington’s interest dating back to the start of the season. Now, it’s official—Chychrun is staying in D.C. for the long haul.

This extension not only secures Chychrun’s future but also sets a benchmark for elite defensemen ahead of free agency. Had he not re-signed, he would have been one of the biggest names available on the market. Instead, he gets the stability he’s been looking for while becoming one of the top earners at his position. The deal places him among the league’s top ten highest-paid defensemen for next season, reinforcing his status as a premier blueliner.

Since arriving in Washington from Ottawa last summer, Chychrun has proven his value. The 26-year-old has shaken off the “injury-prone” tag that once followed him, appearing in 147 of 152 possible games since the start of last season. Now, after spending years on struggling teams in Arizona and Ottawa, he is finally poised for a deep playoff run. The Capitals, who have been dominant throughout the season, are legitimate Stanley Cup contenders, and Chychrun has played a crucial role in their success.

A big reason for Washington’s surge has been the smart roster moves made by general manager Chris Patrick. Signing defenseman Matt Roy and acquiring Chychrun strengthened a blue line that has been one of the league’s best. Chychrun has delivered on expectations, ranking third in the league for goals by a defenseman with 18 and adding 25 assists for 43 points. He has split time between defensive pairings with John Carlson and Trevor van Riemsdyk, slightly reducing his average ice time, but that only speaks to Washington’s depth.

With this deal, Washington has ensured defensive stability for years to come. Alongside Chychrun, Roy and Rasmus Sandin are under contract through 2029, providing the Capitals with a strong core even as veterans like Carlson and van Riemsdyk consider their futures. The team now has around $14 million in cap space heading into the offseason, allowing them flexibility in making further moves.

Since his breakout season in 2020-21, Chychrun has continued to prove himself as a top-tier defenseman. With this extension, Washington is betting on him being a cornerstone of their defense for years to come.
