2025 Miami Open Upset Alert- David Goffin takes down Goliath Carlos Alcaraz in Miami!

World No. 55 Goffin led by a break in all three sets and finished the game on his second match point.

The 2025 Miami Open witnessed the biggest upset of the tournament as David Goffin defeated Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes. The 34-year-old Belgian outclassed Alcaraz, who won the title in Miami in 2022. Former World No. 7 is now 4-1 against the Top 3 since 2020.

Goffin lost the first set 5-7 against the second-seed Alcaraz but he came back in the remaining two sets to counter the World No. 3. The defeat came after Alcaraz’s semifinal exit at Indian Wells, where Jack Draper ended his 16-match winning streak in the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Carlos Alcaraz won the opening set 7-5 but couldn’t replicate it in the final two sets. World No. 55 Goffin led by a break in all three sets and finished the game on his second match point. Goffin went 15/33 of his second-serve return points and won 17 of his 24 net points.

The Spaniard committed 43 unforced errors, including 28 on the forehand wing and wasn’t convincing with his serve. Carlos struggled against the Belgian veteran, who had a night to remember. Alcaraz had a 4-3 (40-40) lead in the second set but his unforced errors allowed the veteran star to seal the win.

“Sometimes he hits the target on the first serve and you cannot do anything,” Goffin said. “The key was, even if I missed, I had to be aggressive. Because otherwise, if I’m just too passive, then he has his forehand or… he has everything. If you’re too passive, then you’re dead.”

Goffin advanced to the third round of the Miami Open for the first time since 2019. He also became the first man to beat a two two seed in the tournament’s opening round since David Ferrer.

Has David Goffin beaten Carlos Alcaraz before?

This is not the first time David Goffin beat the 21-year-old Spaniard. Former World No. 7, Goffin defeated Alcaraz three years ago in Astana in their last meeting in 2022. Goffin improved to 2-1 in his Lexus ATP Head-to-Head series against Alcaraz with the win in Miami.

Who will David Goffin face next?

David Goffin is the first player outside the top 30 in the ATP Rankings to beat Alcaraz this season. The 34-year-old will face Brandon Nakashima, the No. 32 in the ATP Rankings on Sunday. The American beat Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the second-round.
