The Reds Are Targeting a Prolific Argentine Striker as a Key Signing, With Interest Confirmed by the Argentine’s Agent.

The season is in its final stage and Liverpool seemed to be in contention for a treble only a few weeks ago. However, their hopes were shattered in a week as they got knocked out of the Champions League round of 16 and lost the EFL Cup to Newcastle United losing the final.

Reports say that Liverpool will be looking to make a lot of changes to the squad. That means bringing in new talents after selling and the name of Argentine Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has come up. Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo, recently confirmed Liverpool’s interest in the striker to the Arabic media website winwin.

He also confirmed that the Reds’ interest isn’t new. He said, “I confirm that Liverpool was interested in Julian last summer.” However, he hasn’t confirmed anything about Alvarez’s future, saying, “As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is competing in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

The Financial Challenge of Signing Alvarez

Liverpool have to decide how interested they are in Alvarez as he will not be cheap to acquire. He has fit in at Atletico Madrid and the club also sees him as the natural successor to Antoine Griezmann who may be leaving sooner rather than later.

Hence, even to consider selling Alvarez, most likely they will not entertain any offer below €100 million. There have been reports that Liverpool may make it a player-plus-cash deal by including Darwin Nunez considering Atleti boss Diego Simeone’s admiration for the player.

However, even then, it would still take a lot of money to convince Atleti to part ways with their star forward. Reportedly, Liverpool are also weighing Alvarez against another high-profile target, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak. However, the asking price for Isak could reach as high as €150 million.

Hence, Alvarez potentially seems like a more realistic option. The Reds may be set to win the Premier League, but are reportedly looking to offload Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and even Mohamed Salah. Hence, they will be in the market actively looking for a suitable striker. Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid last summer in a €95 million deal.

Hence, a move for him will cost Liverpool more than that. Considering Alvarez’s roaring form including 22 goals across all competitions for Atleti, Liverpool may actually decide to break the bank for him. The coming months will depict how the whole saga unfolds.
