The Jordan Mason Trade Makes The Vikings Offense Stronger And The 49ers Weaker!

The San Francisco 49ers have traded away their running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings. This is a solid addition for the Vikings as they’re getting someone who not only produces but is also coming in pretty cheap. Mason is just 25 years of age and is coming off of his best season so far in his three year career. So why did the 49ers get rid of a young talent who could have a long and promising career ahead of him?

According to various reports, the 49ers traded Mason because it clears cap space and the 49ers’ draft capital for the next two years. The 49ers also already have Christian McCaffrey, and a promising rookie RB in Isaac Guerendo, which made Mason not so valuable for them.

Mason had never started for a game until the 2024 season, and had mostly come off the bench. This may have hampered what Mason could have achieved if the 49ers just let him start for a full season. In 2024, after their star RB Christian McCaffrey was out for the season due to an injury, the 49ers decided to start Mason for 6 games. He played in 12 total games and put up his career best numbers with 789 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns, 11 receptions, and 91 receiving yards.

Now that he’s with the Vikings, Mason could finally get the playing minutes he deserves. The pairing of RB Aaron Jones and Mason is just another move the Vikings have made to get even stronger than they already were.

Jordan Mason’s Trade Details

The San Francisco 49ers traded away Mason and pick No.187 to the Vikings. Meanwhile the Vikings gave away a 2026 6th round pick and pick No. 160 this year to the 49ers.

The Vikings are signing Jordan Mason to a 2-year $12 million deal, which includes $7 million guaranteed at signing and an average annual salary of $6 million.

How Will the Mason Trade Help Minnesota?

The Vikings already have a solid RB in Aaron Jones but adding Mason has now given them a safety cushion and a tremendous backup. He is capable of exploding at times as we saw him do last season where he had 3 games over 100 rushing yards. The Vikings have secured some depth to their roster without really giving away much and signing Mason to a relatively cheap deal.
