Geno Smith Trade – Do the Seahawks Trading Geno Smith to the Raiders Open Up Doors for Sam Darnold?

Eric Divakaran

The Seattle Seahawks have traded their starting quarterback Geno Smith for a third round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders . This trade came as a shock to the entire football world and Smith will now be reunited with his former head coach, Pete Carroll. Nobody really expected Seattle to trade their QB1 as he had a great season last year.

Smith threw for 4320 passing yards, had 21 touchdowns, and had a pass completion rate of 70.4 percent. The Seahawks reportedly wanted to give Smith a contract extension but the two parties could not come to a mutual agreement, thus leading the Seahawks to trade away their best quarterback.

It’s also been reported that the Seahawks wanted to acquire the Raiders’ EDGE, Maxx Crosby, for Geno Smith and D.K. Metcalf, however, the Raiders declined the offer. The Seahawks were able to trade Smith for only a mere third round pick.

The Seahawks have been busy this offseason!

Seattle has been very aggressive in the offseason so far and not only have they traded away Smith, but they also want to trade away their WR D.K. Metcalf, since he asked for a trade. Now that the Seahawks have traded away their QB1, they desperately need another QB of a similar quality or better. Sam Darnold is the first name that comes to our mind, when we think about a quality QB that is available. So this begs the question, has the Geno Smith trade to the Raiders, opened up a new door for Darnold? Let’s find out.

Will the Seahawks acquire Sam Darnold?

It would make a lot of sense for the Seahawks to acquire Darnold simply because he is the best QB available in the free agency. He revived his career playing for the Vikings last season and threw for 4319 yards, scored 35 touchdowns, and had the best pass completion rate of his career with 66.2 percent.

The Vikings could not choose clearly between their rookie QB J.J. McCarthy and Sam Darnold and they ultimately decided to let Darnold test the waters in free agency. Even though there is a still a possibility for Darnold to resign with the Vikings, if he wants a long term commitment, bigger contract, and more guaranteed money, he should definitely give the Seahawks a look.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
