Davante Adams’ comment on Patriots HC Jerod Mayo raises eyebrows amid Raiders trade rumors

During a recent interview with media personality Maverick Carter, Davante Adams openly expressed his belief that:

“A black head coach on the Patriots is gonna be bigger, than putting a black head coach on the Raiders.”

This statement comes amid reports that the Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver has requested a trade. While Adams has previously spoken highly of the Patriots and their head coach Jerod Mayo during a podcast earlier this summer, that’s about all the connection between him and the team right now. One of the main reasons for Adams wanting to leave likely stems from the Raiders’ shaky quarterback situation.

Davante Adams trade rumors

Over the offseason, the New England Patriots made multiple attempts to secure a top wide receiver, reportedly offering major contracts to Calvin Ridley and, more recently, Brandon Aiyuk. Despite these efforts, neither player joined the Patriots, leaving the team without a true ‘No. 1 receiver’ as the 2024 season kicked off. However, four weeks into the season, they might have another shot at landing a top-tier receiver.

On Tuesday, ESPN broke the news that Las Vegas Raiders star Davante Adams has asked for a trade. Adams, 31, is a three-time All-Pro with an impressive record—five seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards and six seasons with 10 or more touchdowns, twice leading the league. This was achieved across his 11-year career with both the Raiders and the Green Bay Packers.

Even though Adams is now in his 30s and dealing with less-than-ideal quarterback play in Las Vegas, his production hasn’t dipped. In the previous season, he played all 17 games and recorded 103 receptions, 1,144 yards, and eight touchdowns. Adams hasn’t missed a game since 2020, maintaining consistency despite challenges.

What could the Raiders ask for in return?

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter,

“Raiders have informed other teams that they would ‘consider’ trading Davante Adams for a package that would include a second-round pick and additional compensation.”

Last season, Adams caught 103 passes for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns over 17 games with the Raiders. This season, through just three games, he has recorded 18 receptions for 209 yards and one touchdown. He achieved this throughout his 11-year career with both the Raiders and the Green Bay Packers.

While the Patriots are in dire need of a true No. 1 wide receiver, it might not make sense for them to pursue Adams, given their current rebuilding phase. At 31, Adams’ best years might be behind him, making it a tricky gamble for New England.

Instead, the Patriots could have chosen a younger option like Brandon Aiyuk, who is five years younger than Adams. Reports suggest they were ready to offer a second-round pick as part of a potential trade for Aiyuk, but he re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers before the season started.

Davante Adams

Additionally, there’s uncertainty about whether Davante Adams would even want to play for the Patriots. The team’s offense has struggled, ranking last in total yards and passing yards, and nearly at the bottom in points scored and passing touchdowns.

Despite these challenges, Davante Adams remains a highly productive player. If the Raiders do decide to trade him, it could have a significant impact on the playoff picture.
