“Why do you want to be the face of the league” – LeBron James questions NBA narrative

The debate around the “face of the league” has caught rapid fire around the NBA media after Anthony Edwards’ refusal to be the one. What was supposed to be a renowned title for a player has become a curse, bringing scrutiny, pressure, and endless debate. Top players show no interest in being the main guy and most blame it on the NBA media.

In a recent interview, LeBron James reflects on the role of being the face of the league, the influence of NBA media, and the responsibilities that come with the title. He also agrees with the former basketball player, Channing Frye, and praises the accuracy of his words.

“Why do you want to be the face of the league when all the people that cover our game and talk about our game on a day-to-day basis don’t everybody?” It’s weird energy from the people that—I don’t know. But Channing, he said it perfectly. Couldn’t say it no better.” added LeBron James.

The Lakers superstar also understands the perspective of Anthony Edwards statement in his All-Star press conference. The young star refused to be the “face of the league” and pushed Victor Wembanyama’s name to be the one.

“But I feel it. I understand. I completely understand. It’s just weird energy when it comes to that.” added LeBron James.

LeBron James also talks about his experience of holding the title

LeBron James has been the face of the league over multiple decades and has also shared the podium with others. The Lakers superstar also sees the honor as a responsibility and emphasizes that while he didn’t ask for this level of attention. While he understands that being in the spotlight means he has a duty to his family, friends, community, and fans.

“I mean, obviously, I didn’t ask for it. But I knew it was a responsibility for me, not only to my family, my friends, my community, and whoever was gonna follow my journey throughout my career. Not only in Ohio when I started there, but all over America and all over the world when I traveled all over the world.” added LeBron James.

It remains to be seen who does the fans and media crown the face of the league after LeBron James and Steph Curry retires.
