Flyers and Comcast Spectacor Unveil Plans for New Arena

Major Development Announcement for the Philadelphia Flyers' Future Home

Regardless of the debate over building a new arena, the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers will indeed have a new venue. Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE) and Comcast Spectacor have formed a joint venture, each holding a 50% stake, to construct a new arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, the Flyers and 76ers revealed on Monday.

“Today’s announcement is great news for the City of Philadelphia, I greatly appreciate the leadership of Mayor Parker and Governor Shapiro and the willingness of HBSE and Comcast to join forces, the result of which will be a world-class arena for 76ers and Flyers fans, with opportunities for more teams to come.” : NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said.

The upcoming venue will host both NHL and NBA teams and will launch in 2031. The collaboration also features a 50-50 venture to invest in revitalizing Market East in Center City. Furthermore, Comcast intends to acquire minority ownership in the 76ers and will team up with HBSE to bring a WNBA franchise to the city.

The decision is unexpected following recent reports that indicated the 76ers would not proceed with plans to construct a new $1.3 billion arena. The Philadelphia Inquirer stated Sunday that several council members verified the alteration in plans after the city’s original endorsement of the project. Council members supported their initial sentiments during Monday’s announcement. The council approved the downtown arena on Dec. 19 following over two years of intense debate about the proposal, despite objections from residents and activists who opposed the agreement.
