With the end of 2024 NFL regular season, here's a look at key dates in January for fans, teams and players

The NFL’s calendar heats up in January, offering a blend of critical deadlines, postseason excitement, and key player activities.

Here’s a breakdown of what fans, teams, and players can expect during the month.

Player Contract Movements Begin: January 6

This date marks the opening of the 2025 free agency window, allowing clubs to sign free agents, including talent from the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Additionally, teams may begin renegotiating or extending rookie contracts for:

• Drafted rookies from the 2022 NFL Draft.

• Undrafted rookies signed in 2023.

Such renegotiated deals will no longer count as rookie contracts, bypassing the usual limitations.

Teams can also exercise fifth-year options for first-round picks from the 2022 NFL Draft, solidifying their investment in emerging stars.

Postseason Roster Freezes: January 8

At 4:00 p.m. ET on January 8, rosters for playoff-bound teams become frozen, with limited exceptions. This rule ensures stability for teams entering the postseason and prevents last-minute roster shuffles.

Wild Card Weekend: January 11-13

The postseason officially kicks off with Wild Card Weekend, powered by Verizon. This exciting three-day event showcases high-stakes matchups between wild-card qualifiers and lower-seeded division winners. Fans can expect thrilling upsets and standout performances.

College Player Deadline: January 15

College underclassmen aiming to enter the NFL Draft must submit their applications for Special Eligibility by January 15. This deadline plays a critical role in shaping the talent pool for the upcoming draft.

Divisional Playoffs: January 18-19

The postseason continues with the Divisional Playoffs, presented by Intuit TurboTax. Top seeds who secured first-round byes will take the field, setting up marquee matchups that determine who advances to the conference championships.

Championship Sunday: January 26

The road to the Super Bowl narrows during the AFC and NFC Championship Games, presented by Intuit TurboTax. These games decide the teams that will compete for the ultimate prize on football’s biggest stage.

East-West Shrine Bowl: January 30

The month concludes with the East-West Shrine Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This prestigious college all-star game showcases promising NFL draft prospects while supporting the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
