All-time leading scorer, Diana Taurasi announces retirement from WNBA

One of the greatest women’s basketball players, Diana Taurasi announced her retirement from WNBA. She played 20 seasons in the WNBA with the Phoenix Mercury and won three Championships. Diana Taurasi remains the WNBA’s greatest ambassador.

The 42-year-old announced her retirement from the WNBA Tuesday in an interview with Sean Gregory of TIME. “Mentally and physically, I’m just full,” she told TIME.

During her 20-year-long career, Diana Taurasi won three WNBA championships, and two WNBA Finals MVP honors. The Mercury legend has also won the six Olympic Gold Medals for Team USA. The 14-time All-WNBA player is the only player in the league’s history with more than 8000 career points.

“Thank you, Diana, for changing the game forever, all of the accolades could never amount to the type of person and edge you embodied when you stepped out there on the court.” WNBA shared a note for the women’s basketball icon.

Taurasi helped the Mercury to win the WNBA Championship in 2007, 2009, and 2014. She was also named an All-Star 11 times, two shy of Sue Bird’s record for the most in WNBA history. Phoenix legend captured the WNBA scoring title five different times and the assist title once.

The entire Basketball world, including the NBA, congratulated Diana Taurasi for an illustrative career. Mercury owner Mat Ishbia said that Taurasi was Phoenix’s legend from start to finish.

“Diana is the greatest to have ever played the game,” Ishbia said. “I’ve been a fan of her my entire life, and she is the ultimate leader and teammate. She’s had an incredible impact on our franchise, our community and the game of basketball. Her name is synonymous with the Phoenix Mercury and she will forever be part of our family.”

Diana Taurasi played 638 career games in the WNBA and played for only one team, Phoenix Mercury. She is the all-time leading scorer with more than 10000 points and the second in all-time in total minutes played. The 3-time WNBA champion dropped 20-point performances 25 times after the age of 40.
