2025 WNBA schedule: Key dates, Commissioner’s Cup & more

The Golden State Valkyries, the new franchise will take on the Los Angeles Sparks in the season opener on May 16.

WNBA has announced the full schedule of the 2025 edition with some changes. The regular season will not kick off until May of next year. Apart from that, WNBA announced the key dates of the season, including the date of the draft, All-Star break, Commissioner’s Cup and more.

Important dates ahead of the regular season

Free agency negotiations will start in January, and fans can get interesting updates of their favourite players who are free agents. Then, free-agent signings can officially start on February 1. Golden State Valkyries will be the new franchise in season 2025.

The WNBA draft will be a big event and will take off during the spring season. The league has locked in April 14 for the draft. All teams will try to boost their squad ahead of the new season, which will begin just over a month after the draft. May 16 will be the opening day of the regular season.

WNBA haven’t confirmed other key dates for the season 2025, like the preseason, training camp start date, trade deadline, and the postseason opening day. The league is likely to announce these dates before next year’s draft day.

Key matchups from WNBA schedule 2025

Due to the addition of a new franchise, the WNBA season will have more games. Each franchise will play 44 games in the season, four more than last season’s lineup. The All-Star game is scheduled to take place on July 19.

The Commissioner’s Cup will be played from June 1-17 with 36 matchups. Each team will fight for a spot in the title game and a chance to claim a piece of the prize pool. The 2025 Commissioner’s Cup title game will be played on July 1.

The Golden State Valkyries will make an entry in the WNBA as the new franchise next year and will take on the Los Angeles Sparks in the season opener on May 16. Opening day will also have two games – Atlanta Dream vs Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx vs Dallas Wings.

The New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces will start their season against each other on May 17. On the same day, we will see a rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. A rematch of the WNBA Finals 2024 will be held on July 31 as the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty will meet each other for the first time since the Finals.
