2025 NFL Draft: Surprise Selections on Day 1 of the NFL Draft

A couple of picks threw up some surprises on day 1 of the draft

Once again, the first day of the NFL draft has come and gone, leaving mixed feelings amongst fans, as some may still be feeling disappointed while others jubilated. There were a few standout players in this draft class, and two of them, defensive end Abdul Carter and two-way player Travis Hunter, were the pick of the litter.

Day 1 Surprise Picks

Almost immediately, right off the bat, the 2025 NFL draft saw its first and what would be the biggest move of the day. The Tennessee Titans made their pick, going with quarterback Cam Ward, which was more or less a guarantee by that point in time. However, following that came a trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars, who moved up four spots to claim the number 2 overall pick.

Jaguars Trade Up for a Possible Two-for-One Situation

In a move that came out of left field, the Jaguars traded up to the number 2 spot, sending the Cleveland Browns to their number 5. With the second overall pick, Jacksonville snagged the wide receiver/cornerback talent Travis Hunter.

What was even more surprising about this move is that during the draft interview, Hunter mentioned he hadn’t spoken with anyone from the team management after the Combine. Hunter is no doubt a special player, thus, the question still remains why Cleveland was willing to let him go and move down when they could have used his talent as well.

Carolina Selects Tetairoa McMillan With Its First-Round Pick

There is nothing wrong with Carolina picking Tetairoa McMillan with their first-round pick, but the surprise factor crops up because this draft is not seen particularly as a strong one for the receiving unit. Instead, the Panthers could have opted for a better player at a different position and come back for a receiver in one of the later rounds.

Buccaneers Select Wide Receiver Emeka Egbuka

The selection of Emeka Egbuka by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round came as a surprise, given that they are already well set at the receiver position with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Although the Bucs roster is quite well balanced, they could have used their first-round pick to bolster the defense with an edge rusher or a linebacker.

All in all, the first round of the draft didn’t spring too many surprises with teams selecting more or less according to their primary needs. Also, there were not too many trades apart from a few toward the end of the round.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
