Check out the results from the third day of 2025 EuroBasket!
Kicking off the basketball weekend, the EuroBasket 2025 round rocked the courts of the old continent this Friday. Six matches from groups A and B were played in Latvia and Finland, respectively. Speaking of Finland, Lauri Markkanen ended up being the highlight of the day, with a 43-point performance. And like the Nordics, other teams continue with a 100% record. If there’s a Germany game, there’s a show from Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner. The dynamic duo shone again, leading the way to their second victory in two games. The reigning world champions relied on 16 points from the Orlando Magic wing to secure the lead in the first half. In the second half, the German attack remained dominant, and the lead quickly reached double digits.
Schroder led the way with 23 points and dished out seven assists. Wagner, in turn, scored 21 points. Veteran point guard Maodo Lo shone from the perimeter, finishing with 13 points and a 100% 3-point shooting percentage. On the Swedish side, Miami Heat’s Pelle Larsson was sidelined due to an injury. As a result, center Mattias Markusson finished as the team’s leading scorer with 13 points.
After surprising the Latvians in their debut, Turkey once again proved they’re not just strolling through the tournament. The start was more difficult than expected, and the Czech Republic finished the first quarter ahead. However, it didn’t take long for Alperen Sengun to enter the game and decide the game. The Houston Rockets center had another outstanding performance, dominating the paint and showcasing his vast repertoire, leading the Turks to victory with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists. Cedi Osman followed shortly after with 21 points.
Another game, another win for Jonas Valanciunas’ Lithuania. The Denver Nuggets center had a Stephen Curry-like day (all things considered), hitting 75% of his three-pointers. His 19 points in the first half alone propelled the team to its second win in Group B, an important result ahead of the clash against the mighty Germany.
The Lithuanians dominated the game from start to finish, forcing 26 turnovers (!) from their opponents with an active and well-positioned defense. They also combined for 35 assists, breaking another EuroBasket record. Young point guard Rokas Jokubaitis achieved a stunning double-double of 23 points and 12 assists, shooting 56% from the field. Montenegro, on the other hand, lacked help from Nikola Vucevic, who scored 20 points and 10 rebounds.
In the duel between the Baltic neighbors, fans from both sides packed Riga Arena in Latvia for a tight encounter. Estonia led for much of the game but lost the lead late in the third quarter. A scoreless streak of more than nine minutes hampered a comeback. Latvia also lacked momentum on offense, but performed well defensively and relied on the decisive Kristaps Porzingis. The center, now with the Atlanta Hawks, finished with 26 points, including eight of the hosts’ nine in the fourth quarter.
Twenty-eight points in the opener, 43 in the second game. It’s safe to say Lauri Markkanen is comfortable playing in front of his home crowd at EuroBasket, right?! The Utah Jazz forward, who already had a 43-point EuroBasket game under his belt, knocked down seven of his 13 shots from the perimeter and had four steals in Finland’s rout of Great Britain, which is already bidding farewell to the competition.
Portugal returned to EuroBasket after 14 years and got off to a flying start, beating the Czech Republic. However, in the very next match, they faced the tournament’s best team on paper. And, so far, on the court, too. Not that the Portuguese didn’t play well, quite the opposite. They fought hard and kept the game even, especially in the first half.
But on the other side was Nikola Jokic. After a low-key debut in terms of scoring, the Nuggets star had 23 points, ten rebounds, and three assists, shooting eight of ten from the field. All this in just 22 minutes. His near-namesake, the Heat’s Nikola Jovic, also had another strong performance, with 18 points and six rebounds. On the Portuguese side, shooting guard Diego Brito stood out with 22 points and nine rebounds, while the Boston Celtics’ Neemias Queta scored just six.
