The Most Improved Player race is taking shape as players step into bigger roles and raise their production. Some players have entered the race as dark horses and may prove lethal down the season.

Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons has been the front-runner throughout the season. He is averaging 25.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game, making his first All-Star appearance of his career. In the 2023-24 season, he averaged 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. The Pistons point guard has led the team to a guaranteed playoff spot with a 5.0 game lead over the seventh seed. This will be their first playoff appearance since 2019. As of March 5, Cunningham is one of five players in the league to record 1000+ points and 500+ assists in the ongoing season.

Dyson Daniels of the Atlanta Hawks has established himself as the second favorite for the award. The 21-year old was traded to the Hawks from the New Orleans Pelicans at the start of the season. Majorly playing as a bench player for two seasons with the Pelicans. The trade worked wonders for the Australian guard as he has started all his 57 games in Atlanta and has doubled his production. The Hawks guard has been lethal on the defensive end of the court, averaging 3.0 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. He leads the league in steals per game and total steals. On the offensive end, Daniels is averaging a career-high of 14.0 points and 4.1 assists per game. In 2023-24, he averaged 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in the previous seasons.

Some distant favorites include Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat who is averaging a career-high in points and assists per game. Christian Braun of the Denver Nuggets who has established himself as a starter in the Nuggets lineup and is averaging career-high in points, assists and rebounds per game. Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers who is the defensive leader of NBA’s number one ranked team and is averaging a career-high in points per game.

According to DraftKings, here are the top-five odds for the Most Improved Player of the Year award:

Cade Cunningham entered the race as with the eighth best odds to win the MIP award. Evan Mobley had the sixth best odds at the start of the season. Dark horses in Daniels, Herro and Braun joined the race with their consistent performances. Injury to Jalen Johnson who was leading the race before being ruled out of the season, also had a major impact on the odds.
