Zach Werenski Fires Back at Teammate Patrik Laine’s Comments

Columbus Blue Jackets' star defenseman Zach Werenski addresses comments made by teammate Patrik Laine, adding intrigue to the locker room dynamic.

With Montreal Canadiens winger Patrik Laine returning to face the Columbus Blue Jackets, tensions were inevitable. Laine stoked the fire with his recent remarks about the Blue Jackets organization. Before the matchup, Laine told reporters that Columbus’ acceptance of losing was a major factor in his trade request.

The Blue Jackets were far from pleased with the Canadiens forward’s comments. On the ice, the Columbus team appeared determined to send a message, delivering multiple heavy hits on Laine, who ultimately did not finish the game.

“They’re a little too satisfied and too comfortable where they’re at, It wasn’t really a fit for me anymore. But here (in Montreal), it doesn’t matter if we’re winning or losing, we’re always trying our best. That’s what I felt about it (in Columbus),” Laine said.

After the game, Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski didn’t hold back when addressing his former teammate’s remarks. The star defenseman called Laine’s comments “bulls–t.” Having shared the locker room for parts of four seasons, Werenski took Laine’s critique personally.

“For him to bash us like that, I think it’s just unacceptable,” Werenski said

As a cornerstone player drafted by the Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft, Werenski felt a deep connection to the team and its culture.

“We were nothing but good teammates to him so for him to come in here and say all that, it’s bullshit, Definitely not happy about it and none of us in the room are happy about it.” Werenski continued.

The Blue Jackets had the last laugh, securing a 5-4 victory. At this point in the season, neither team is in the playoff race, making Laine’s criticism of Columbus’ culture somewhat ironic, given the Canadiens’ struggles. Nonetheless, the spark from this encounter is likely to carry over when the Blue Jackets and Canadiens meet again.
