You Won’t Believe Why Jasson Dominguez Had to Leave After a Game-Winning Hit

Jasson Domínguez is finally looking like the Martian Yankees fans were promised. After flashing elite defense in left field on Monday night, the 21-year-old switch-hitter followed it up on Tuesday with his most complete performance of the season, at least, until a bizarre twist forced him out of the game.

Facing the Royals at Yankee Stadium, Domínguez capped off a three-hit night with the biggest swing of the evening. Batting right-handed, his less dominant side, the rising star lashed a bases-loaded, two-out double off lefty Angel Zerpa in the sixth inning, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 Yankees lead.

But moments later, fans were left stunned when manager Aaron Boone subbed Domínguez out of the game before the top of the seventh. Social media exploded with criticism: Why bench a player in the middle of his best game?

Why Did Jasson Dominguez Leave the Field?

Turns out, Domínguez’s dramatic double came at a cost. On his follow-through, Domínguez clipped his own batting helmet with his backswing, knocking it loose and, more importantly, dislodging his contact lenses in the process. Somewhere between home plate and second base, his vision quite literally blurred. Boone had no choice but to pull him.

“He knocked his contacts out,” Boone explained postgame. “It wasn’t something we planned – we’ve been rotating guys late in games, but this time, it just kind of happened.”

And yet, the move worked out. Trent Grisham took over in center field, shifting Cody Bellinger to left. Almost immediately, Grisham, a two-time Gold Glove winner, ran down a deep MJ Melendez drive at the wall, preserving the lead.

Domínguez has come a long way since last season’s late call-up, when his defensive inconsistency relegated him mostly to pinch-running duties during the postseason. Boone made it clear Tuesday’s decision wasn’t about performance, and that the team still believes in the young outfielder’s two-way ability.

After Grisham’s highlight-reel grab, the bullpen took over. Luke Weaver entered in a high-leverage spot, stranding two Royals runners in the seventh and then cruising through the heart of Kansas City’s lineup in the eighth. Devin Williams followed with his cleanest outing yet as a Yankee, locking down the save in the ninth.

But the night belonged to Domínguez, even if it ended in a blur.
