Yankees’ updated bullpen after Nestor Cortes- Devin Williams swap

The Yankees are wasting no time reshaping their roster after losing Juan Soto to the cross-city rival New York Mets in a record-breaking $765 million deal last week. The Bronx’s first big signing came in the Winter Meetings when they signed Max Fried to an eight-year deal. Now they have made another upgrade to their pitching lineup by landing closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Yankees sent left-handed starter Nestor Cortes Jr., infield prospect Caleb Durbin, and $2 million in cash to Milwaukee in exchange for Williams. The move plugs a big void in the bullpen created by the departure of Clay Holmes, who signed with the Mets in free agency.

Williams is joining the Yankees with an impressive career ERA of 1.83 and 68 saves in 78 chances over six seasons, striking out 375 and walking 112 in 235 2/3 innings over 241 games.

He will take over as the team’s closer, bolstering the bullpen alongside Jonathan Loaisiga, who was recently re-signed for a one-year deal.

The addition of Williams would also mean that Luke Weaver will return to the setup role which he gave up to take over from Holmes.

What’s next for the Yankees?
