974 Days Later, the Yankees Finally Walk It Off With a Home Run

For a team whose fanbase declares the season is over by April every single year, the Yankees have certainly tested that reflex in 2025: Juan Soto walking in free agency, Gerrit Cole done for the year, Giancarlo Stanton?? Luis Gil out till June, Devin Williams forgetting how to close, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hurting himself, again. But somehow, despite it all, things have gone the Yankees way lately. They’ve won five straight series, the rotation’s holding firm, the offense is alive, and now, finally, the walk-off home run drought is over. Jasson Dominguez’s rocket to right wasn’t just a win – it was a sign that maybe, just maybe, this season isn’t over at all 🙂

It took 974 days, but the Yankees finally remembered what a walk-off home run feels like. And fittingly, it came off the bat of a 22-year-old who’s still barely learning how to leave Earth.

Jasson Dominguez, the Yankees’ out-of-this-world prospect nicknamed The Martian, crushed a hanging slider from Luke Jackson into the right-field seats Wednesday night, giving New York a dramatic 4–3 win over the Texas Rangers, and ending one of the more bizarre droughts in recent Yankees history.

A Special Yankees Walk-Off

Not since September 20, 2022, had the Bronx seen a walk-off homer. That one was a Giancarlo Stanton grand slam off Aroldis Chapman of the Pirates, back when Aaron Judge was hitting home run No. 60.

Last night at the Bronx, Dominguez rounded the bases, ripped off his helmet, and was mobbed at home plate. “It was awesome; my first walk-off,” he said afterward. “As soon as I hit it, I knew that was my first walk-off, and I was enjoying it.”

The Yankees certainly did too. Jasson Dominguez’s walk-off clinched their fifth straight series victory. Even Aaron Judge, who knows a thing or two about iconic Yankee moments, had to laugh when asked about the walk-off homer drought finally ending.

“They’ve always got MLB Network on in here,” he joked. “They love to show those kinds of stats on the bottom line.”

If the crawl on MLB Network gets updated this week, it’ll be because The Martian made contact. And for the first time in nearly three years, the Yankees walked it off with a homer.
