WNBA Results, August 21: Las Vegas Aces Extend Winning Streak to Nine Games, Dream Hand Lynx their First Consecutive Loss of Season

It was a day of upsets in the WNBA. In four games that took place across venues in the WNBA, all lower-seeded teams defeated their upper-seeded counterparts, pulling off some major upsets. The Connecticut Sun, who are at the bottom of the standings, defeated the tenth-seeded Washington Mystics. In another game, 12th seed Chicago Sky registered a significant win over the reigning champions, New York Liberty. Similarly, the Atlanta Dream defeated the Minnesota Lynx, and in the final game, the Las Vegas Aces took down the Phoenix Mercury.

Connecticut Sun 67-56 Washington Mystics

The Connecticut Sun, simply the worst-performing team of the season, registered their second straight win by defeating the Washington Mystics 67-56 in a low-scoring affair. They were led by Tina Charles, who dropped 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Apart from her, only Aaliyah Edwards managed to reach the double-digit mark, as she dropped 10 points and five rebounds. The Sun were shooting 27-67 from the field and 2-14 from the three-point range.

On the other hand, the Mystics were led by Sonia Citron, who poured 15 points, one rebound, and one assist. Kiki Iriafen came up with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist. The Mystics shot 19-51 from the field and 3-16 from the three-point range.

Chicago Sky 91-85 New York Liberty

The Chicago Sky pulled off one of their most notable victories of the season as they defeated the reigning champions, New York Liberty 91-85. Kamilla Cardoso recorded 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, while Angel Reese scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The win put an end to their five-game losing streak, and a five-game skid against New York as well. Ariel Atkins came up with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists while Michaela Onyenwere recorded 13 points. The Sky went 31-62 from the field and 4-18 from the free-throw line. Overall, they had 13 turnovers, similar to their rivals.

On the other hand, the Liberty had Jonquel Jones dropping 25 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Apart from her, Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Cloud dropped 16 and 14 points, respectively. The defending champions were shooting 30-72 from the field, 13-37 from the three-point range and 12-15 from the free-throw line.

Atlanta Dream 75-73 Minnesota Lynx

In the third game of Thursday, the Atlanta Dream took down the table-toppers, Minnesota Lynx 75-73 in a close contested affair. This is the first time that the Lynx suffered consecutive losses in the ongoing season.

Allisha Gray led the Dream with 27 points, four rebounds, and two assists, recording her 15th 20-point game this season. Rhyne Howard added 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Overall, the Dream had 34 rebounds and 18 assists as they shot 27-71 from the field and 9-31 from the three-point range. The victory pushed them to the second spot in the standings.

Talking about the Lynx, Bridget Carleton came up with 16 points, six rebounds, and two assists while Jessica Shepard and Kayla McBride dropped 15 points each. As a team, they grabbed 42 rebounds and dished out 20 assists while shooting 29-70 from the field and 9-20 from beyond the arc.

Las Vegas Aces 83-61 Phoenix Mercury

In the final matchup of the day, the Las Vegas Aces recorded their ninth straight win as they defeated the Phoenix Mercury 83-61. A’ja Wilson dropped 19 points, 13 rebounds, and one assist while Dana Evans scored 17 points, and one rebound for the Aces, who are now 23-14 in the season. They haven’t lost since their 111-58 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on August 2, and have won 11 of their last 12 games. Not only this, but they have also won seven straight games at home.

NaLyssa Smith, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray poured in 12 points each for the Aces.

Talking about the Mercury, Alyssa Thomas led the charts with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists while Satou Sabally came up with 15 points. They were limited to season lows for points as well as field-goal percentage at 31%. The Mercury also had an injury scare after Kahleah Copper left the game after a collision with Wilson in the third quarter. She finished the game with six points, two rebounds, and one assist.
