The 2025 Wimbledon Championships are set to draw the curtains after the pinnacle match-up – Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz. It is a thrilling rivalry on the men’s circuit that keeps on giving. Speaking of thrilling, very few things in tennis are more entertaining than a classic tiebreaker. Today, we will explore the rules of a tiebreak in Wimbledon.

What Are the Rules in a Tennis Tiebreak?

Typically in a game of tennis, tiebreakers are played when both players successfully reach 6 games each. While 6 is the designated game score required to win a set of tennis, a score of 5-5 means that players will aim to reach 7 with a game difference of two. If the deadlock isn’t broken and the set moves to 6-6, a tiebreak will determine who takes the set.

In a traditional tiebreak at Wimbledon as well as the other Grand Slams, players race to 7 points. Player-A opens the tiebreak with one serve, followed by two serves per player until the end of the tiebreak. If the points scored in the tiebreak reaches 6-6, players will keep playing until there is a clear cut difference of two points. Once a player reaches a score of 7 or wins by the above-mentioned difference of two points, they proceed to claim the set 7-6.

What Are the Rules in a Fifth Set Tiebreaker at Wimbledon?

Earlier, Wimbledon used to implement a “difference of two games” rule after 6-6 in the fifth set. This meant that if the game score reached 6-a-piece, players would keep playing a regular match until there was a clear-cut difference of two games. This effectively ruled out the possibility of a tiebreak in the deciding set. However, these rules no longer exist.

As per the changes, deciding sets at Wimbledon will now be determined by a 10-point tiebreak at 6-6. Players will race to 10 points, and a difference of two points will be required to break the tie if scores reach 9-9 and onwards. The same rule is being implemented at all four Grand Slams – with the Australian Open being the first to do so in 2019. The new format prevents matches from extending too long, and ensures thrill for fans.
