Wimbledon’s second week begins with high-stakes matchups as top names and surprise contenders battle.

The second week of Wimbledon 2025 is underway, and with it comes the highly anticipated Round of 16 in the women’s singles draw. The race for quarterfinal spots is heating up in a tournament that’s already delivered its share of surprises.

From lucky loser Solana Sierra (Argentina’s No. 1), who stunned home favorite Katie Boulter, to Clara Tauson’s statement win over former champion Elena Rybakina, the underdogs have left their mark. Sierra now faces Laura Siegemund, who took out eighth seed Madison Keys, while Tauson prepares for a major clash with top seed Iga Swiatek.

Among the more expected names, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has powered her way into the second week and will take on 24th seed Elise Mertens, herself no stranger to this stage, having reached the Round of 16 in 2019 and 2022. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro continues her breakout run with a maiden fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon, facing 19th seed Liudmila Samsonova.

Seventh seed Emma Navarro, a quarterfinalist here last year, is set for an exciting duel with rising star Mirra Andreeva. Meanwhile, British hopes rest on Sonay Kartal, the last home player left in the women’s draw, as she faces 2016 quarterfinalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, fresh off wins over the 31st seed, Ashlyn Krueger and four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
