The Detroit Lions 2024-2025 season was a rollercoaster, which was marked by the crushing loss of star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. On October 13, 2024, in a 47-9 rout of the Dallas Cowboys, Hutchinson suffered a severe injury; a broken tibia and fibula, which ending his season. The clean break required surgery with a rod that sidelined the NFL’s premier pass rusher, who had racked up 7.5 sacks, and 12 tackles in just 5 games that he played in. Without Hutchinson’s disruptive presence, the Lions’ defense loosened, struggling to replicate its early-season dominance. Despite this, the Lions posted an impressive 15-2 record, clinching the No.1 seed at NFC, with trade deadline addition of Za’Darius Smith, who provided some relief but not really filling the void entirely.

The Lions, led by coach Dan Campbell, are a tough team mentally and their resilience carried them into the playoffs, but Hutchinson’s absence was still a glaring hole. In the NFC divisional round, Detroit suffered a devastating 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders, which was a stunning upset that might ranks among the franchise’s most painful recent disappointments. The defeated clearly highlighted how critical Hutchinson was to the team’s Super Bowl aspirations. As we are midway through the offseason, Hutchinson has been fully cleared by the doctors and he has been a full participant in the team’s offseason workouts.
Aidan Hutchinson’s return in 2025-2026 season brings relief to Detroit Lions and Dan Campbell after a rocky 2024-2025 season. Hutchinson’s absence clearly affected the Lions despite a 15-2 record. The loss to the Commanders still stings but at least Hutchinson’s comeback as an elite pass rusher restores some hope for the Lions. With center Frank Ragnow’s retirement creating a leadership void, Hutchinson’s presence offers a little bit of continuity and grit. If last season’s small sample size was trying to tell us anything of what’s to come, but expect Hutchinson to have a breakout season this year and Campbell can now lean on his shoulders to anchor the defense, fueling Detroit’s case for redemption and a deeper playoff run next season.

Prior to the injury, in just 5 games played, Hutchinson was leading the NFL in sacks with 7.5, and many experts and fans believe that he was on pace to win the Defensive Player of the Year award. Previously, he had already set the franchise record for most sacks by a rookie. Hutchinson is working hard to make his comeback on the field, and the 2025-26 season could be a very special year for the 24 years old.

Given below is what the stats looked like last season, with and without Aiden Hutchinson;
Stat Categories | On Field | Off Field |
---|---|---|
Opp. Passer Rating | 75.4 | 77.1 |
QB Pressure Pct | 20.5 | 35.6 |
Defensive Sack Pct | 7.9 | 4.0 |
Blitz Pct | 31.6 | 38.9 |
Hutchinson is clearly one of the Lions’ most important pieces and it clearly hurt them last season, with the opposition feasting on Detroit’s weakened defense. However, not that he is cleared to play and is already getting ready for the next season, the Lions could go deeper into the playoffs this season, and Hutchinson could potentially win his first DPOY award.
