Why Luka Doncic cannot win MVP this season?

Luka Doncic remains sidelined with a left calf strain for at least the next two weeks.

Luka Doncic was not part of the lineup in the 122-101 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday afternoon and he is now ineligible to earn NBA Awards for the 2024-25 season. The Slovenian will not meet the minimum 65-game threshold as per the rule.

Luka’s ineligibility to win the NBA MVP is a heartbreaking reality, but he would target the Championship this year. He sustained a calf injury on Christmas Day against the Timberwolves. He participated in shooting drills during Saturday’s practice and his recovery will take a few more weeks.

Luka Doncic remains sidelined with a left calf strain for at least the next two weeks. He has missed 17 games in the NBA 2024-25 season. It also ends his streak of five consecutive appearances on an All-NBA first team. He will not meet the NBA’s 65-game requirement for awards.

Dallas Mavericks star joins a list of stars who will be ineligible for NBA 2024-25 awards, including Kawhi Leonard, Joel Embiid, Zion Williamson, Paolo Banchero and Chet Holmgren.

Mavericks coach, Jason Kidd also shared his thoughts on Luka Doncic becoming ineligible to win the league MVP due to the NBA’s minimum game threshold. “Yeah, it’s fair because the league made it a rule, so we will play by the rules,” Jason Kidd said.

“Unfortunately he isn’t eligible to win the MVP, but it’s a team sport and understanding that we need him back to win the championship… The individual awards will come, but we’re playing to win a championship and hopefully we can get him back soon.”

Meanwhile, Doncic’s primary goal is to win an NBA championship. The 25-year-old has been asked about the possibility of winning the MVP and he said that he would rather lead his team to a championship. Dallas Mavericks are 2-4 without Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic after a loss to Denver Nuggets.
