Mike Trout’s effort on a routine ground ball led to yet another injury scare on Wednesday night, as the Los Angeles Angels outfielder exited early from a 9-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee.

Trout appeared to tweak something while trying to leg out a grounder in the third inning. He lunged toward first base at full speed and came up just short of beating the throw. Though he remained in the game for the bottom of the inning, he was pulled before his next at-bat and replaced by Jo Adell.

“When it happened, I knew it was like just a weird one,” Trout said postgame. “But now, after getting treatment and stuff, I should be a little better soon.”

The 11-time All-Star underwent tests after the game and speculated that the discomfort might be from scar tissue loosening up. He sounded optimistic about playing in Thursday’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Trout was 1-for-2 before exiting and has played in all 29 games this season, 22 of them in right field, without taking a day off. He’s hitting .173 with nine home runs and 18 RBIs so far in 2025.

Mike Trout’s Recent Injury History

This incident brings uncomfortable déjà vu for Trout and the Angels. Exactly one year and one day ago, Trout’s red-hot 2024 campaign was abruptly halted by a torn meniscus in the same knee. That injury led to a lengthy rehab stint, which was cut short after just two innings when Trout experienced renewed pain. Further scans revealed a separate tear that shut him down for the season.

The bigger concern for the Angels is the recurring pattern: Trout has played 100 or more games just once over the last four seasons. A fractured hamate bone sidelined him for most of the second half in 2023, and a calf strain in 2021 limited him to just 36 games.

For now, both Trout and the team are hopeful this latest issue is minor, but with his recent history, even the smallest scare is scary.
