26-year-old Valentin Vacherot has made history by becoming the first player from Monaco to reach a tour-level final in the history of tennis. On Saturday, he defeated Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-4 to extend his unbeaten run to eight matches at the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters. Having come through qualifying, the No. 1 ranked Monegasque player has become the breakout star in China. He is set to face either Daniil Medvedev or Arthur Rinderknech in the grand final. But what is Valentin Vacherot’s tennis story? Let’s take a look.

The Early Life of Valentin Vacherot

Valentin Vacherot was born on 16 November, 1998 in the city-state of Monaco. The World No. 204 started playing tennis at a very young age, and took a liking to it sooner rather than later. Vacherot went on to play college tennis for Texas A&M University, and turned pro in 2022.

Interestingly, Vacherot has several family connections within the sport of tennis. He is coached by half-brother Benjamin Balleret, who is the son of former professional tennis players Bernard Balleret and Alexia Dechaume-Balleret. Vacherot’s cousin brother is Arthur Rinderknech – who is a former ATP Top-50 player and US Open pre-quarterfinalist.

Vacherot’s Tennis Career Over the Years

Valentin Vacherot made major progress upon winning his maiden ATP Challenger title at the Nonthaburi Challenger 2022 in Thailand. The powerhouse baseliner is unbeaten in finals on the Challenger Tour, winning four consecutive summit clashes. Vacherot benefited from his immense rise as well as home turf advantage, and received wild-cards at the 2023 and 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters. Unfortunately, he lost his opening round battles against Luca Nardi and Grigor Dimitrov, respectively.

In 2024, Vacherot lost to the eventual champions at the Tiriac Open and Open Aix Provence. The now 26-year-old proceeded to make his Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros 2024 after making it past the qualifiers. In Round-1, the superstar of Monaco was humbled by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. After two failed attempts, Vacherot finally won a main draw match at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters over Jan-Lennard Struff. In the process, he became the first Monegasque player to win an encounter at the tournament since Jean-Rene Lisnard in 2009.

The Dream Run of Valentin Vacherot at the 2025 Shanghai Masters

Valentin Vacherot entered the Rolex Shanghai Masters 2025 as an alternate in the qualifiers. When he was drawn against 10th seed Nishesh Basavareddy in his opening fixture, not many people would have anticipated what ensued. Vacherot bounced back from a set down to defeat the American, before pulling off another comeback victory over 14th seed Liam Draxl to enter the main draw.

In the Round of 128, Laslo Djere became the next victim of the 6’4” giant. Vacherot earned a straight sets win, and advanced to the Round of 64 where he was due to face a monumental challenge vs No. 14 seed Alexander Bublik. Yet, he showed no signs of slowing down – Vacherot hit 11 aces in comparison with 10 aces by Bublik – completing another come-from-behind 3-6 6-3 6-4 win.

Next up for the unseeded headliner was No. 20 seed Tomas Machac. Vacherot led 6-0 3-1 before his Czech counterpart was forced to retire from the match. As a result, he reached his first Masters-1000 Round of 16 and became just the second player from his nation to do so. If you thought this was the end of his fortune and grit, you are mistaken. For the fourth time in 10 days, Valentin Vacherot lost the opening set before delivering a masterful comeback. In the quarterfinals and semifinals, he defeated ATP giants Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic to enter the Top-60 in the live rankings.
