Sometimes, tennis is just passed down through generations. Emilio Nava knows all too well about it. While the 23-year-old is still looking to have a breakout, 2025 has been a solid year for him. However, he’s set to face off against Taylor Fritz at the US Open 2025. Yes, that’s going to be a massive challenge for a player who is yet to enter the world top 100. However, for Nava, tennis is more than just a sport. For him, it’s a way to send an important message. So, it’s only natural to want to know more about the phenom who wants to change the world.

Who is Emilio Nava?

Born on December 2, 2001, in West Hills, California, Nava was exposed to sports since birth. Both his parents, Eduardo and Maria, represented their respective countries in international events. However, Emilio Nava wasn’t just a tennis player. He first began playing the sport with his brothers. But the Nava brothers also took up running in order to build their endurance and stamina. That was the beginning of Nava’s sporting journey. However, Nava’s tennis career hasn’t particularly been a path paved with roses.

Emilio Nava’s Career

Emilio Nava’s tennis journey began when he was just 3. It was his mother (herself a former player) who encouraged him to take up this beautiful sport. However, little did they know, Nava would turn into a prodigy. So good was Nava in his junior year that his parents were forced to homeschool him to support his tennis career. Nava was trained in the USTA National Academy but also spent about four years training in Spain.

In 2018, at the age of just 16, Nava got his first ranking points. And then by 2022, Emilio Nava broke into the world’s top 200. Till now, Nava has won five Challenger titles and is looking to make his mark in this year’s US Open. However, Nava is still looking for that memorable breakout in the Grand Slams. Especially because he comes from a family that has competed in some huge events.

Emilio Nava’s father, Eduardo Nava, was a Mexican track and field star who also gained fame at the University of Alabama. Eduardo competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics. Coincidentally, it was at this event that Eduardo met Emilio’s mother, Maria Xochitl Escobedo, the Mexican tennis player. Calling Emilio Nava’s family a proper tennis family won’t be wrong, as even his brothers, Eduardo Jr. and Diego, have played college tennis.

But that is not at all the end of Emilio Nava’s tennis connection. The Navas also happens to be the cousin of the ATP tour player Ernesto Escobedo. In fact, Escobedo once noted how Nava was able to keep up with his 18-year-old self while just being 13 himself. “He kept up like no other and ever since then I just felt like he had something special in his tennis, 100 percent,” Escobedo said to ATP Tour. Certainly, this familial tennis culture has had a deep impact on Nava. However, life is more than just tennis for Nava, especially after a tragic incident shook his soul.

Emilio Nava’s Charity Work

Emilio Nava is associated with the Live Like Braun Foundation. In May 2025, Braun Levi, an 18-year-old tennis player from California, tragically lost his life after being hit by a suspected drunk driver. The incident shook Nava, who will be representing the foundation in this year’s US Open.

“It was super sad and to be part of it and try to help in some way, even if it’s just by representing, I was completely up for it and I think it’s great,” Nava said to ATP Tour. “If I can help one percent and try to extend the story about his life and what he did, it would be amazing.” However, this is more than just about honoring Levi. Nava admitted he’s also trying to raise awareness against drunk driving.

“It’s ending drunk driving, letting a friend drive, take an Uber. You let people go home if you do that,” exclaimed Nava. The 23-year-old has been wearing the patch of the foundation in hopes of giving it some much-needed exposure. That’s one of the reasons why Nava hopes to go far in the US Open – it means more than just winning for him; it means saving someone’s life.
